“Hey what’s up with you and Dominic?” Stella said to Akua at work. Akua shrugged as she kept typing on her computer. Stella knew something was wrong so she kept asking. Akua noticed she wouldn’t leave until she spilled the beans so she signalled for her to come closer. “Things are a bit awkward between us because we kissed.” Akua whispered. “What?!” Stella blurted out loud. “Shhh, not so loud.” Akua said dragging her to the corridor. She made sure there was no one else around. “That’s good news.
I always knew he liked you.” Stella teased. Akua shook her heard. She told Stella everything that happened on that day. “I understand why you aren’t happy about this but I know you like him too so talk to him. Find out if he is actually serious.” Stella said. Akua knew she was right but something inside her was wondering how she would do that.
The next day Akua gathered up courage to talk to Dominic. She saw him pick up his keys around 1pm and knew he was heading out to have lunch. She planned to talk with him outside the office. She didn’t want anyone to know what happened between them. She knew for sure, Terry their colleague wouldn’t be happy about it. She grabbed her purse and walked slowly behind Dominic. When he got to the parking lot she called him. He turned. When he saw her he smiled but looked surprised, pleasantly surprised. “Can I join you for lunch?” She asked, smiling back. He nodded immediately and opened the door for her.
The restaurant they usually had lunch at was just a 5 minute drive from the office and they were there in no time. “I’m sorry about how I reacted the other day. We are two adults. You don’t need an explanation for what happened.” Akua said to break the silence. “It’s fine. You don’t have to apologize.” Dominic explained. Akua changed the subject immediately the meal arrived.
When Akua and Dominic came from the restaurant she knew she had to talk to him before they go into the office. “So what do you want from me?” Akua said bluntly. Dominic was speechless. “Wow that’s a very harsh question.” Dominic replied. Akua shrugged. She didn’t mean to say it like that but that was just what was on her mind. “I like you. That’s the only thing I can say. I honestly didn’t and still don’t know if the feeling is mutual but that night I knew with our big break one of us might have to move to the company abroad. “It was stupid but I just had to let you know how I felt.” He explained.
“Why didn’t you just tell me you liked me?” Akua asked. “I tried but you wouldn’t answer my calls or talk to me. I know I suck at properly asking a girl out.” He explained. “I’m sure it’s because you get girls even without asking? They are just all over you eh?”Akua cut in. Dominic stared at her. He was upset. “I don’t blame you for the perception you have about me. Sometimes you should get to actually know someone before you judge them.” He finally said. Akua wasn’t sure what to say. She really liked him but she felt he wouldn’t take her seriously. “I like you too but I don’t think I’m ready for a relationship now.” She lied. Dominic nodded. “I respect that.” He replied and walked briskly to his office. Akua felt bad. She wasn’t sure she was doing the right thing. She just didn’t want to get hurt.
